The Flow of Grace to Noah and Ruth //
Last month we looked at the nature of grace. This month I want to demonstrate how grace flows using the example of two characters we find in the bible.
The first of these is Noah. I suggest you read Genesis 6:8. In fact read from verse 5-8.
What we find is that sin had multiplied as man multiplied to such an extent that it grieved God and he regretted creating man.
However verse 8 paints a different picture. The word says that Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.
God saw in Noah something different. He had waited patiently for a change in man’s heart but nothing changed. He had searched the whole earth. He had examined the character of everyone. Everyone was filled with evil except Noah. Consider the heart of God. He had waited and waited for a change until it had got down to one man. That man had a heart after God and God caused His grace to flow towards him.
Verse 9 Provides us with an insight into Noah’s character. It is
confirmed in Hebrews 11:7. That scripture tells us Noah became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.
If we then read on in Genesis we see the benefit that grace brought to Noah. The flood like a tsunami washed away the sin.
However grace towards Noah had a different result. It gives us an insight into the greater flow of grace for us today.
a It kept Noah alive
b It gave him protection
c It brought Noah blessing and favour
d If you like in summary it brought salvation and separation to God in the flood
However there was a responsibility in Noah to walk that way consistently. It could have taken years to build the ark. Noah had to be obedient to do what God said. When he did it covered his family also. Grace flowed to them and they were saved with him. Finally it ensured the bloodline of Jesus.
A man had sinned it needed a man untainted by the devil to bring salvation and the heart of Noah ensured the flow until Jesus came.
Grace flowing to Ruth
I love the book of Ruth. There is so much in there. You should know the story. There was a famine in the land and Elimelech had run from God. He dies. His sons die. His wife is left alone in a foreign land with the wives of the two sons.
Naomi tries to persuade these women to go back home.
Orpah did but not so Ruth.
Lets read Ruth 1:14-17. What we experience is Ruth clinging to Naomi but in doing so clinging to God whom she hardly knew. However it seems she knew enough. That action was a turning point for Ruth and Naomi who got blessed as well.
Together they returned to Bethlehem.
Ruth by law in Israel had nothing going for her.
She was a foreigner
She was poor
She was a woman
She had no claims on anyone
She was bottom of the social ladder.
That is a picture we may be familiar with today.
But she had put all her faith and trust in the God of Israel.
When she did the grace of God began to flow in her life.
Boaz was the channel of that grace. He is a type of Christ, what we call a kinsman redeemer.
As we read the story of Ruth and how things changed for her we come to Ruth 2. We see that she just happened to come upon Boaz’s field as she was gleaning the harvest. If you make the right choices then what looks like it just happened is Gods flow of grace and blessing to you.
From this passage we see that grace flowing
1) She received protection.
2) She received food that was unexpected
3) She recieved love. In Ruth 2:8 Boaz took the initiative. God always will. Boaz fell in love with her. God has done the same for you. He has always been in love with you.
4) She recieved acceptance. You are accepted in the beloved
Grace always includes you.
Ultimately she recieved prosperity. Boaz was a rich man. We enjoy the riches of the Father.
6) She got encouragement
7) She found rest
His grace is flowing in you. Now you may say. Why me, just look at the mistakes I make. Why should God pick me
Well God does not make a mistake. He is always right. His reasons for choosing you are perfect.
Now that should cause you to enter into rest. It stops all the doubting and allows you to use your faith with confidence.
Grace is flowing to you just as it did with Noah and Ruth. It is time for us to live in the fulnerss of that grace and see the power of God in action.
